Four Basic Rules for Website Design

There are four basic rules to follow for good website design:

  1. Easy to Read
  2. Simple Navigation
  3. Consistent Design
  4. Light Page Weight
1. Easy to Read

First and foremost, your website should be easy to read. People should understand right away what the website is all about. When you write your content, remember that most web page readers do not read every word of a page. In fact, they only scan quickly to find what they want.

Website Marketing PDF Print E-mail

When you think of marketing, you may think of traditional marketing such as TV commercials, radio ad spots, press releases, newspaper ads and magazine ads. Many large Internet companies are using these traditional forms of marketing. However, these forms of marketing can only be effective if they are global – and that costs a great deal of money.

So – how can you leverage the global aspect of the Internet right from your computer? There are as many ways to market online and offline as there are hairs on your head, however, I will discuss nine. They are:

  1. Search engine submissions
  2. Targeted directory submission
  3. Targeted article submission
  4. Opt-in e-mail lists (not SPAM)
  5. Using Autoresponders
  6. PPC advertising
  7. Affiliate Marketing
  8. Blogging and Forums
  9. Search Engine Optimization

One way to measure a website’s importance and success on the Internet is its Google Page Rank (PR). PR is the measurement I will use for this discussion. Google has some of the best algorithms in the world for determining the quality of its search results. The more quality results a search engine provides, the more popular it will become – this is one way they compete for users.

In an effort to keep Search Engine Result Pages (SERPS) accurate and clean, Google has devised a scoring system as part of its tactic. The score goes from 0 to 10, ten being the best. I am not aware of ANY sites, except Google itself, that have a PR of 10. Yahoos’ is 9. So a PR of 5,6,7 or 8 is really good. PR of 2, 3 or 4 is ok for small sites. 1 is a fledgling site, but it shows up in SERPS for keyword searches, WAY dow in the SERPS – but 0 does not show up anywhere.

Google has some pretty fancy formulas that determine PR. Part of it is how many quality relevant backlinks you have to your site. The thing to be aware of is that if you have 100 backlinks from sites with a PR of 0, how important does that make your site look? Like a 0. So you need relevant links from quality sites – sites with higher PR. This will help raise your PR.

Want to know a website’s PR – find out!

The higher the PR, the better. Why?

Because if you can get into the top of the SERPS for your keywords: you can get exposed to potentially millions of viewers. And being in the SERPS is free! But everyone is struggling to get in the top 10 – so how do you compete?

First, if you have not done so, review my article on keywords. Then read about writing content. When you have chosen your keywords and know what categories your site fits into, you are ready to begin.
