You can make money as an affiliate. This site, for example, has affiliate links on it. When someone clicks one of my web hosting link and buys a hosting plan, I make a commission. The customers pay no more through the affiliate link than they would have otherwise – so I can sleep well at night and they are happy they found what they needed.

The reason I make money from the web hosting is that I have signed up as an affiliate for each hosting company I deem of high enough quality to include on this site.

You Can Become an Affiliate

Its easy to become an affiliate. In fact, there are affiliate programs out there for almost anything you can think of. It does not matter if you are selling financial services or books or exercise equipment.

Finding Affilaite Programs

The best way to find affiliate programs is to sign up with a broker or two or three. You can download my resource spreadsheet for a list of brokers / affiliate management firms to look into.

Additionally, whenever you are browsing a site that offers a service or sells a product, look at the main and bottom navigation for a link titled "affiliates" or "partners". That is where you are likely to find information about affiliate programs that company has to offer. Sometimes they work through a broker, so you will get an opportunity for other programs when you sign up.

Choose Affiliate Programs

Once you sign up through a broker, you will be provided with a list of participating companies, usually categorized by subject. I suggest you choose subjects that relate to your site’s content.

Be Prepared

Some companies want to see your website before they will approve you to be an affiliate, so be sure to have a website online and ready for visitors.

How Affiliate Links Work

Once you are approved, you will be able to get affiliate links. The code for a “normal” link to, say, WordTracker’s keyword analysis membership, looks like this:

But an affiliate link code looks like this:

(the affiliate link above does not contain valid affiliate id information)

The affiliate link includes information about you, the affiliate, that WordTracker can keep track of. When the customer who clicked the link makes a purchase, you get credit for the sale and make a commission.

How Much Money Can You Make?

Some affiliate programs pay out $100 or more per sale. Some only pay $5. But think about it: all you do is code the link and advertise your site (which you’re doing anyway, right?) and people come, people click, you get paid. How much you can make depends on how much traffic you can get to your website.
